Cloud computing with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a web-scale virtual computing environment powered by Amazon Web Services. It provides everything needed to develop and host applications: compute capacity, network bandwidth, storage capacity, and the leading open source operating system platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
anytime including: running applications on-premises (using physical and virtual) servers, running applications in application/server hosted facilities, and finally running application in the cloud, i.e., Amazon?s Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, also known as "EC2", is a commercial web service which allows paying customers to rent computers to run computer applications on. EC2 allows scalable deployment of applications by providing a web services interface through which customers can request an arbitrary number of Virtual Machines, i.e. server instances, on which they can load any software of their choice.
Current users are able to create, launch, and terminate server instances on demand, hence the term "elastic". The Amazon implementation allows server instances to be created in zones that are insulated from correlated failures. EC2 is one of several Web Services provided by Amazon.com under the umbrella term Amazon Web Services (AWS).
EC2 uses Xen Virtualization. Each virtual machine, called an instance, is a virtual private server and can be one of several sizes. Instances are sized based on EC2 Compute Units which is the equivalent CPU capacity of physical hardware.
In November 2007, Red Hat announced the availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux On Demand on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), a web service that provides resizeable compute capacity in the cloud. This collaboration makes all the capabilities of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including the Red Hat Network management service, world-class technical support and over 3,400 certified applications, available to customers on Amazon's proven network infrastructure and datacenters. ...

Executive Summary
The widespread adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in everyday life and commerce has given rise to new digital problems and challenges. Although information provided by networks is abundant, the human attention required to process it is limited.
And although digital resources in principle are unlimited, many online platforms have artificial scarcities built into them as part of their design. The demand for these scarce resources, their supply, and the markets where the supply and the demand meet, constitute a computer-mediated virtual economy.
During the past decade, developing countries have rapidly followed developed countries in ICT adoption, and in some areas, such as mobile payments, even surpassed them. However, developing countries? roles in the digital economy mostly have been limited to being users and consumers of technology. Creating new digital services and technologies for the global market requires advanced skills and infrastructure, and continues to be out of reach for most entrepreneurs in developing countries.
In contrast, entrepreneurial opportunities in the virtual economy of digital scarcities have sometimes been successfully exploited, even with limited skills and infrastructure. A prominent example of this is the third-party gaming services industry.
An estimated 100,000 young, low-skilled workers in countries such as China and Vietnam earn their primary income by harvesting virtual resources and providing player-for-hire services in popular online games such as World of Warcraft. The demand for these services comes from millions of wealthier players who have a serious interest in the game world and the social connections it facilitates, but lack the time (and patience) to reach far into the game alone. ...

Executive Summary
361 million >> 144 million >> 4 million. Thus goes the tally of total records compromised across the combined caseload of Verizon and the United States Secret Service (USSS) over the last three years. After four years of increasing losses culminating in 2008?s record-setting 361 million, we speculated whether 2009?s drop to 144 million was a fluke or a sign of things to come. 2010?s total of less than four million compromised records seems to suggest it was a sign. But of what? And is it a permanent change in direction or a temporary detour?
To help us answer that, we are very glad to have the United States Secret Service (USSS) back with us for the 2011 DBIR. Additionally, we have the pleasure of welcoming the Dutch National High Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) to the team. Through this cooperative effort, we had the privilege?and challenge?of examining about 800 new data compromise incidents since our last report (with 761 of those for 2010). To put that in perspective, the entire Verizon-USSS dataset from 2004 to 2009 numbered just over 900 breaches. We very nearly doubled the size of our dataset in 2010 alone!
It is fascinating from a research standpoint that the all-time lowest amount of data loss occurred in the same year as the alltime highest amount of incidents investigated. In addition to being the largest caseload ever, it was also extremely diverse in the threat agents, threat actions, affected assets, and security attributes involved. We witnessed highly automated and prolific external attacks, low and slow attacks, intricate internal fraud rings, country-wide device tampering schemes, cunning social engineering plots, and much more.
Some of the raw statistics may seem to contradict this claim of diversity (e.g., the percent of breaches attributed to external agents is more lopsided than ever), but one must consider the change in scale. Whereas ?10%? used to mean approximately 10-15 breaches across an annual caseload averaging 100-150, it now means 75 breaches in the context of the 2010 caseload. Consider that fact as you digest and ponder results from this year?s report.
With the addition of Verizon?s 2010 caseload and data contributed from the USSS and NHTCU, the DBIR series now spans 7 years, 1700+ breaches, and over 900 million compromised records. We continue to learn a great deal from this ongoing study and we?re glad to have the opportunity once again to share these findings with you. As always, our goal is that the data and analysis presented in this report prove helpful to the planning and security efforts of our readers. As usual, we begin with a few highlights below. ...

How Dirty is Your Data? A Look at the Energy Choices That Power Cloud Computing
Executive Summary
Information Technology (IT) is disruptive. Largely for the better, IT has disrupted the way we travel, communicate, conduct business, produce, socialise and manage our homes and lives. This disruptive ability has the potential to reduce our dependence on dirty energy and make society cleaner, more efficient and powered renewably. But as we applaud the positive, visible impacts and measurable, game-changing potential of IT, we also need to pay attention to what?s behind the curtain.
The ?cloud? is IT?s biggest innovation and disruption. Cloud computing is converting our work, finances, health and relationships into invisible data, centralised in out-of-the-way storage facilities or data centres. This report seeks to answer an
important question about this trend, currently underway across the globe: As cloud technology disrupts our lives in many positive ways, are the companies that are changing everything failing to address their own growing environmental footprint?
A quick glance at the letter grades on our Cloud Energy Report Card (found on page 7 of this report) indicates that many IT brands at the vanguard of this 21st century technological shift are perpetuating our addiction to dirty energy technologies of the last two centuries.
We analysed the data centre investments of 10 top global cloud companies and our findings show a trend across the industry towards extolling the external effects of IT products and services, while failing to take seriously the need to power this widespread aggregation of the world?s information with clean, renewable electricity.
Parts of our individual lives are becoming more efficient even as we consume more. IT can enable us to cut down on energy intensive practices by allowing us to work from home with teleconferencing and telecommuting tools. We can now read our electricity use in real time and manage it better accordingly.
We can stream music on the internet instead of taking up space on our hard drives. In each of these examples, there is potential for us to choose to live in less energy-intensive ways, cut our personal greenhouse gas emissions, and shrink our footprint, individually and collectively.
The IT sector has a choice to make as well. As the demand for IT products and services grows exponentially, in the US, Europe and particularly in developing economies such as India and China, so does the amount of data we produce globally. That information requires physical storage and access to reliable electricity. Indeed IT?s server farms are expanding and multiplying rapidly. In our technologically interconnected world, data centres are the factories of the 21st Century.
Whereas the factories of the Industrial Revolution got us into a mess by burning coal and releasing carbon pollution into the
atmosphere, the factories of the Technology Revolution have the ability to make use of better energy choices. In the following report, we have looked at available information about the choices being made today by major IT brands about where to site and how to power their factories. It is clear that their commitment to transformative change, which includes responsibility for their own growing footprint, is still in question.
Additionally, much of the information that would allow us to assess the net benefits of the cloud by also measuring the true environmental cost of these localised, power-hungry data centres is missing. IT companies, which broadly declare transparency a major tenet of their business model, are highly secretive about their own operations. This veil of secrecy makes it nearly impossible to measure the actual benefits of cloud technologies or understand the extent to which IT?s growing need for electricity is increasing the use of dirty energy.
While a few companies have clearly understood that the source of energy is a critical factor in how green or dirty our data is, and have demonstrated a commitment to driving investment attached to clean sources of electricity, the sector as a whole still seeks to define 'green' as being 'more efficient'. This failure to commit to clean energy in the same way energy efficiency is embraced is driving demand for dirty energy, and is holding the sector back from being truly green.
Throughout this report, we attempt to shed light on the state of the cloud?s energy footprint by examining available information about IT companies and their data centres. First, we have attempted to explain and summarise the problem through examples of data centre investment and a graded analysis of the infrastructure choices of leading cloud companies.
We also assessed best practices and leading footprint mitigation strategies. Finally, we have included some key recommendations for a sector that wishes to be seen as green and transformative, but is coming up short on it?s transparency and energy choices.

Laser Skin Treatment: Not Only for Vanity
The improvements in lasers today are quite amazing. They definitely are a part of supermarket bar code scanners, laser printers and compact disk players. Because of lasers, hair follicles become disabled but not really destroyed.

Rosacea Treatment and Skin Photorejuvenation Using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
What is Intense Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL)?
It is sometimes called phototherapy or photorejuvenation and delivers light (heat) energy to the 'deeper layers' of the skin, whilst leaving the surface layer intact.
It is an effective skin rejuvenation procedure that is well suited to clients in a busy city (and elsewhere) who require an effective skin rejuvenation treatment with little or no downtime. How Does Intense Pulsed Light Work?
IPL non-laser technology supplies a broad spectrum of light that reaches deep down to the collagen level of the skin to produce remarkable results. The therapeutic light energy is transformed to heat energy. The target tissue is then fragmented and absorbed without damage to the surrounding skin. The skin surface is left smooth and rejuvenated.
How Is The Photorejuvenation Procedure Performed?
A cold gel is applied to the area to be treated. The smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is gently placed on your skin and pulses of light are applied. The use of tattoos can be traced back as early 5000 years ago. Its purposes evolve with time, ranging from passage rights, indication of rank and status, to serving as protection or amulets. Now, the tattoo has become more of a fashion statement, and as with any fad, you may sometimes feel like changing the look of your existing tattoo. Nowadays there are various options for tattoo ink removal which are categorized into two.
These are the laser and pre-laser methods. Both have their own pros and cons, although the major difference is the cost and the intensity of pain it involves.
The pre-laser is also referred to as the traditional technique. The process is generally painful and excruciating while the cost is less expensive compared to laser methods. Below are the pre-laser methods.

Laser Tattoo Removal
These days, most people use laser technology to remove their tattoos. Basically, lasers remove tattoos by breaking up the pigment colors of the tattoo with a high-intensity light beam. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate to wipe away the ink. However, overdoing the treatments can cause damage to you skin and eventually lead to scarring. If treated properly, sometimes there are no traces of scarring but it really depends on the situation. Basically, the laser type, number of sessions and the patient's body ability to rid it self of the ink are factors that can determine the outcome of the procedure. Depending on your tattoo, you may need anywhere from 1-10 sessions, each costing in the range of $250-$1000 per session.
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is an effective tattoo removal treatment that targets intense light onto the upper layer of the skin basically burning it off. The treatment stimulates new skin growth, and when the treated area heals, the tattoo is usually much less noticeable than before. This method is said to be not as painful as laser therapy, and more effective, resulting in less treatment sessions. It usually takes 10-12 months after the treatment for full results to show. The cost of IPL is based on the number of pulses your tattoo requires to be removed and it can range anywhere from $10-$15 per pulse.
Using Creams to Fade Away Tattoos
Creams are a chemical, non-laser approach to removing a tattoo. They are used over an extended period of time to gradually fade away a tattoo. However, results are not guaranteed and people usually resort to this method only if laser treatments are out of the budget. Some creams burn away layers of skin and can cause scarring. The positive side to cream is that it's affordable, however the saying goes as follows "you get what you pay for."
Excision
Excision involves removing the tattooed area of skin and then stitching it closed. This method is more ideal for smaller tattoo, however can still be used on larger ones. For larger tattoos, the skin is removed and a skin graft from another part of the body is used to cover the area.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure where the surgeon uses a sanding tool to go over the skin in order to rub off the top layers of the skin to reveal fresh skin beneath. Local anesthesia is used during the treatment. When the procedure is over, the skin appears to be red in color and is tender. It usually takes the skin a few weeks to heal. This procedure is not recommended if the patient is prone to scarring. If the patient is prone to hyper or hypo-pigmentation as well, then this procedure is not highly recommended.

Photofacial - Anti-Aging Skin Care Treatments For Removal of Age Spots and Blood Vessels
Photofacial skin care treatments, also called IPL, short for Intense Pulsed Light, are very effective, no down time, safe methods for removing pigment, or brown spots, and excess or broken blood vessels from the facial skin. Photofacial or IPL anti-aging skin care treatments use a bright flash of visible light, like the light of a camera flash to remove pigment and blood vessels non-surgically from the skin. This pulsed or flashed light is very different from a laser and in most instances, less powerful and less dangerous that laser light.
I use a Photofacial IPL machine called the LuxGreen IPL made by Palomar Medical Laser Company in Burlington, Massachusetts. Palomar Medical is the premier manufacturer of Aesthetic Laser and Light therapy machines in the world. The LuxGreen Photofacial is the best Photofacial technology I have ever used. The LuxGreen Photofacial IPL machine is very effective and is the most comfortable for you the patient of any IPL device available.
Photofacial skin rejuvenation works by passing a flash of bright light through a filter that only allows a specific color of light in the flash to pass through the filter and hit the skin. In the case of the LuxGreen Photofacial, only light with a wavelength of 550nm (nm=nanometers or one millionth of a meter and is the measure of the green light wavelength in the visible light spectrum) to pass through the IPL filter and hit the skin.
The LuxGreen IPL 550nm light is selectively absorbed or taken up by the brown pigment in an age spot or the dark reddish brown color of blood in a blood vessel. When the Photofacial light energy is absorbed by the pigment or blood vessel, the heat from the Photofacial or IPL light destroys the pigment or blood vessel by heating it.
This process is called Target Specific Photothermolysis. A specific target, that is a color, is heated (thermo) with a light (photo) beam and dissolved or destroyed (lysis).
Using color filters placed in front of the Intense Pulsed Light beam, a wide variety of colors can be allowed through to treat many different skin conditions including hair removal (LuxRed), acne (LuxViolet), and others.
What Will My Skin Look Like Immediately After a Photofacial Skin Care Treatment?
Unlike lasers, which can cause the skin to peel and possibly leave scars, the Lux Green IPL treatments are very gentle on the skin. The pigment in the brown spot or age spot will darken very slightly, and the treated blood vessel will also darken a bit. However the skin will be intact. The treated areas may also be slightly pink for a few hours.
We place ice or a cool pack on the treated area immediately and this also may make the skin pink. However, the pinkness may be covered with makeup immediately. You may return to work. And your skin will be nearly normal the next day.
Does An Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatment Hurt?
There is minimal discomfort during an IPL care treatment. Anesthesia or numbing medicine is not required. When the IPL flash hits the skin you will feel a small snap or sting, but this is easily tolerated by all of my patients.
How Many IPL Skin Care Treatments will I Need?
Usually 3 IPL skin care treatments are required spaced 4-5 weeks apart for the best results. Multiple treatments are the price for gentle treatments that are not painful and do not injure the skin.
Technically enough power can be used to remove the brown spot or blood vessel in one treatment, but this energy level would be painful, blister the skin and possibly leave a scar. This is what happened with old time laser treatments, and the new IPL is designed to remove pigment and blood vessels painlessly and with no trace or scar left behind. To accomplish this we need to stage the removal in 2-3 treatments 4-5 weeks apart. The results are well worth the wait.
How Soon after My Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatment Will I See a Result?
Generally you will see the results of your IPL skin care treatment at 4-5 weeks. The brown spot will be lighter or gone and the red spot or blood vessel will be much smaller. Some patients with thin skin and very light pigment or small broken blood vessels will see complete removal after one treatment.
However most people see definite improvement 5 weeks after the IPL treatment and require 2 more treatments for complete removal.
How Many Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatments Will I Need?
If you have very fair thin skin with minimal sun damage and very light pigment or very tiny blood vessels you may only need one IPL treatment. However most people need 3 treatments scheduled 4-5 weeks apart for a complete result.
Who Should I Consult For My Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Care Treatment?
The best IPL machines are found in a physician's office. Less powerful IPL machines are allowed to be used in Spas, but results are not as effective with these downgraded machines. In my experience patients do not get the results that they want in a spa, and often come to my practice for repeat treatments with the LuxGreen IPL after having already spent money for IPL in a spa.
The other benefit of having your IPL treatment in a physician's office is that you will be examined by a doctor who can properly diagnose your skin condition. Some brown lesions are dangerous and require medical evaluation and should not be treated with Intense Pulsed Light. If you have Rosacea or larger blood vessels on your face, a different therapy is required. These are medical treatments and should be done in a doctor's office. Your skin will be evaluated for more serious skin conditions, and you will receive more effective Intense Pulsed Light skin care treatments.
How Do I Find a Good Doctor to Do My Intense Pulsed Light Skin Care Treatment?
Light based and laser non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments are best done by a doctor who is well trained and specializes in anti-aging skin treatments. Your safest bet is to seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has experience in laser and light based therapies such as Intense Pulsed Light.
I am of course prejudiced because I am a board certified plastic surgeon. However, a plastic surgeon is trained and capable of providing the full range of non-surgical and surgical skin anti-aging procedures and can customize your skin treatments to your unique face. Doctors who cannot provide all treatments are tempted to "fit your unique face" into the particular skin treatment they offer, and that is not the best situation for you.
